As a secondary monomer for polyacetal (POM), 1,3-dioxolane gains wide attention for growing uses: grease/dye solvent, trichloroethane stabilizer and photosensitizer raw material. Two mainstream synthesis routes adopt paraformaldehyde or concentrated formalin with MEG. SL Tech has offered formalin-based dioxolane technology since 2008. Raw materials react at 90–100 °C under atmospheric pressure with sulfuric acid catalyst, then sequentially go through enrichment, extraction, heavy and light fraction distillation to obtain pure dioxolane.
